Es ist schön, das Jahr diesmal mit einer guten Nachricht abschließen zu können: Der von der hiesigen Wirtschaft wie dem sprichwörtlichen Mann auf der Strasse auf breiter Front abgelehnte Plan unseres Finanzministers, in Hong Kong eine General Sales Tax (GST) einzuführen, ist vom Tisch! "Endlich" möchte man anfügen, denn die Idee erhitzte schon viel zu lange die Gemüter, und hinter ihrem -ohnehin oft glücklos hantierenden- Verfechter stand zum Schluss nicht einmal mehr die eigene Regierung. Ob in dieser Sache dann auch ein Machtwort aus Beijing fiel, wie einige munkeln, erscheint eher unwahrscheinlich. Sicher ist allerdings, dass ein hoher Vertreter der Zentralregierung bei seinem Besuch hier in allgemeiner Form betonte, wie überaus wichtig gesellschaftliche Harmonie für Hong Kong sei. Der Wink dürfte vollauf genügt haben, denn nur Tage später nahm unser einsamer "Mr. GST" sein Lieblingsprojekt abrupt vom Tisch.

Good news for Hong Kong at last: General Sales Tax (GST), our Financial Secretary's ill timed, badly presented and -in view of the government's strong revenue surplus- simply unnecessary pet project is finally off the table! One can say a lot of bad things about our Henry Tang, but not that he is a pushover: For months he stood stubbornly (no few say stupidly) firm against an ever growing tide of public outrage and the total absence of any support from his colleagues or the Chief Executive himself. In the end, however, this situation became so strange (to put it mildly) that a visiting bigwig of the Central Government found it necessary to drop some "general remarks" on the importance of social harmony and our government's listening to the will of the people. Just days later Henry the Fearless abruptly saw the light and meekly announced that now was not the right time to discuss, let alone introduce, GST. Probably his very first statement ever, where everybody agreed with him...
